Epilepsy Ontario Celebrates Magical Victorian Christmas

TORONTO, November 27, 2006 – Epilepsy Ontario (EO) will celebrate a magical Victorian Christmas of enchanted gingerbread dreams on Friday, December 8 at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto. The event will raise funds to help support EO's programs for children and youth living with epilepsy across Ontario.

The evening will truly reach back to the height of the Victorian era. Renowned Canadian artist Douglas Laird will be the special guest and his latest painting called "A Winter in the City" will be on display. Internationally acclaimed mezzo soprano opera singer Margaret Maye will also perform. The evening will offer a Victorian dinner, exquisite Victorian gingerbread houses, music and dancing. An eclectic array of art from prominent Canadian artists will be presented on a silent auction table along with fabulous gift baskets.

"300,000 people in Canada live with epilepsy, some can live normal lives and for some it's debilitating," says Dr. McIntyre Burnham, President of EO. "Epilepsy is highly misunderstood and surrounded by myths and misconceptions. This is hard enough on adults but even more difficult for young people to deal with. The funds raised tonight will go to programs that help children and youth with epilepsy get more out of life."

EO's children and youth programs include the Summer Camp for Kids with Epilepsy, Teens with Epilepsy Retreat and the development of new school educational material.

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder—a physical condition—which causes a malfunction of the electrical signals that control the brain. It is characterized by sudden, brief seizures whose nature and intensity varies from person to person.

For the past 50 years EO has been dedicated to creating independence and an optimal quality of life for people living with seizure disorders by promoting awareness, advocacy, support services, education and research. EO is a registered, not-for-profit charitable organization.
