from the President
Dr. McIntyre Burnham, president of Epilepsy Ontario and chair of the executive committee
A major goal for Epilepsy Ontario this year is public education. We have decided to approach it by working through the schools. We have 2 major objectives: 1. to make education in epilepsy part of the curriculum for teachers' colleges;
2. to make education in epilepsy part of the curriculum in all health classes.
We are working on teacher education first.
We have assembled an ad hoc committee (chaired by Mac Burnham and Irene Elliot of the EO Executive Committee) comprising teachers, parents and epilepsy professionals. The first meeting took place on Monday 3 November at the Bloorview Site of the Bloorview-MacMillan Centre. It focussed on the question What do teachers need to know?
The next meeting will be at the Bloorview site on Monday 1 December. It will focus on How can we effectively educate teachers? A draft position paper, What do teachers need to know? will be circulated for comment in the near future.
Any who would like to attend the next meeting — all are welcome — should contact the provincial office of Epilepsy Ontario for directions to Bloorview.
