Seizures & Degenerative Conditions
Alzheimer Disease
Alzheimer Disease (AD) affects 1 - 2% of the population older than 60 years of age. The incidence increases as age advances.
AD is associated with a 6- to 10-fold increase in risk for epilepsy.
About 15% of persons with AD will have unprovoked seizures by 10 years after diagnosis.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
Studies show that up to 5% of persons with MS experience seizures.
Parkinson Disease
Although preliminary studies show a 2-fold increase in risk for epilepsy among persons with Parkinson Disease, some animal studies suggest that it may protect from the development of seizures, because it destroys key nuclei required for seizure generation. This has not been confirmed.
