Scholarship Overview

Epilepsy Ontario is pleased to announce that for the third consecutive year various students have received an Epilepsy Scholarship Award across Ontario. Epilepsy Canada co-ordinated this Epilepsy Scholarship Award, which resulted in 30 winners across Canada, including the 10 winners from Ontario. This scholarship will help students with epilepsy continue their studies at a Canadian university or college during the 2005 academic year. The winners are Michael Bell, Tanya Boisvenue, Benjamen Clouthier, Kieran Jedermann, Sara Kelly, Meaghan Schreider, Olivia Slota, Thomas Turnbull, Stacy Watson and Sarah Zuiker.
"Most young people with epilepsy finish high school and go on to college or university – if that's what they want," said Tanis Rideout, Ontario Epilepsy associate.
About 300,000 Canadians have epilepsy, representing approximately one to two per cent of the population. The vast majority of people with epilepsy can lead active, independent, and fulfilling lives. Unfortunately, children as well as adults often encounter problems caused by the ignorance and fear of others around them. Children with epilepsy are often teased, and adults are faced with people who believe that they are incompetent. Epilepsy Awareness Month is essential in providing interesting and educative programs in an attempt to rid society of the ignorance and stereotypes. Once we are all fully informed about epilepsy, we can eliminate the problem of discrimination that people with epilepsy face.
The only truly national epilepsy scholarship award program is designed to help young people with epilepsy across Canada pursue their studies at a college or university of their choice. The Epilepsy Scholarship Awards are funded by Lundbeck Canada Inc., a Danish research-based pharmaceutical company that specializes in the development and marketing of medications used to treat central nervous system disorders.
