SabrilŪ (vigabatrin) Now Listed Under Ontario Drug Benefit Formulary

As a result of Bill 26 in the Ontario Legislature, the List of Non-Formulary Benefits (LNFB) will be merged with the regular Ontario Drug Benefit Formulary / Comparative Drug Index (ODBF). The result of this should be positive for people with epilepsy who are drug responders. In the past, drug plans which used the ODBF as their model for a formulary did not consider drugs on the LNFB as listed benefits. Many, therefore, did not reimburse these on their own drug plans.

The former LNFB drugs are now considered listed benefits in Ontario which should mean that there is every reason to press drug plans who did not reimburse these drugs in the past to do so now. This applies to FrisiumŪ, (clobazam) and SabrilŪ (vigabatrin) when the new ODBF is published and should include other newly approved drugs for epilepsy from other pharmaceutical companies.

Seniors (65+ years of age) and people receiving social assistance will benefit most from the new ODBF.

SabrilŪ (vigabatrin) was discovered in the research laboratories of Hoechst Marion Roussel Canada, a member of the Hoechst Group, in France 1977. Vigabatrin has been available in Canada since 1994.
