Ontario Works – York RegionServices
There are 3 basic components to the Ontario Works Program: Employment Supports, Employment Services, and Community Participation Placement. The Participation Placement component in the Ontario Works program is mandatory.
Employment Supports- Qualifying activities are those which support participants in their efforts to become job-ready and access the shortest route to paid employment.
- Clients with mandatory requirements will be expected to actively participate in a service plan of increased activity to support their eligibility for social assistance benefits.
- Services such as Resource Centres and Local Area Office waiting room Employment Resource Units will support the self-directed activities of clients as they work towards employment.
- A variety of workshops will be developed as required.
- Group orientation to the Ontario Works Program will run in all Area Office locations.
Employment Placement
This component supports participants who are job-ready to find and maintain employment and assists participants interested in self employment to develop business enterprises.
Community Participation Placement- Any unpaid community service activity under the direction of communities and/or public non-profit organizations qualifies.
- In order for a client to participate in community participation placement, it must be a "value-added experience" for the client.
- Clients who are currently in a volunteer activity may be able to use it as part of their approved activity within their case plan.

Career Assessment Program
This program incorporates standardized and non-standardized assessment tools to gather data to assist with career decision making. A review of existing skills through analysis is done. Areas of strength and improvement are determined, in order to be open to alternatives.
Work Skills Assessment
This 2-week assessment, utilizing simulated workstations, is basically an aid to career exploration.
Vocational Assessment & Counselling- Job sampling and on-the-job experience
- Assessment of general employability factors:
- aptitudes
- learning styles
- problem solving skills
- Work hardening program to increase stamina
- Work adjustment training
- Informational interviews with employers
- Pre-placement in-house counselling
- Identification and counselling for interpersonal problems
- Identification of employment barriers
- Development of a vocational goal
- Determination of program feasibility
Job Search Assistance
This is one-to-one job search assistance and counselling to assist an individual client.
Components of the program include:- preparation of résumé and covering letter
- job search and job interview techniques
- contact with perspective employers and clerical support.
Labour Adjustment & Out-Placement
This service assists with:- goal setting
- enhancing job search skills
- résumé preparation
- information on resources available in the community
- career assessment
- counselling
- secretarial support.

This job matching and referral service helps employers find suitable candidates for their available position, and presents potential employees with a list of job openings. The service has a special disabilities division to help people with disabilities find jobs. Each month, a "Hot Job List", part of the disabilities division, is posted on their website.
Services are mainly for those living in York Region and the Greater Toronto area.
It is fully funded by Human Resources Development Canada.

Literacy and Basic Skills Program
Free full-time program offering intensive upgrading in Mathematics, English and Science to the equivalent required for college eligibility, further training or employment.
Eligibility- Applicants must be at least 25 years old and eligible to work and study in Ontario. Certain exceptions apply.
Office Systems Operations Certificate Program
A self paced learning experience that is predominately computer intensive.
Eligibility- 30 keystrokes per minute
