Preventing Falls
Falls are one of the most serious health concerns for seniors and others with seizure disorders. Falls are the largest cause of physical injury, immobility, psycho-social dysfunction, and premature death in old age. The likelihood of accidental falls increases with advancing age. Females have a higher rate of fall-related injuries than males, with a ratio of 3:1 respectively.
Fear of falling is a key concern for seniors living with or without epilepsy. Head injury from a fall is one major cause of epilepsy in seniors. Here are ways seniors and their caregivers can lower the risk of falls without compromising mobility.
- Double check the medication you are taking with your doctor. A problem of frequent falling could be caused by a medical problem.
- Exercise regularly to strengthen your muscles.
- Implement General Home Safety suggestions.
