PIPEDA
The Human Rights Code is in place to honour the rights of individuals. It states that no one can be discriminated against on certain grounds, such as ethnic origin, sexual orientation, or age- among other things. Another document which was created fairly recently to also protect peoples' right to freedom is the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). PIPEDA was implemented in 2004 to help protect peoples' privacy in various ways. It is meant to prevent unauthorized gathering of information about a person, whether electronically or in regular paper format. Due to the extreme reliance on technology in this day and age, it is easier than ever for companies to obtain information about a person without their direct consent. All organizations should have a privacy policy; it has a direct impact on the lives of many individuals as well. For more information on Epilepsy Ontario's privacy policy, you can visit the website or contact us by phone. However, if you are looking for more information specifically about PIPEDA you can call toll free 1-800-282-1376 or visit the office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada online at http://www.privcom.gc.ca/
