Magnet-Induced VNS

An implanted vagus nerve stimulator normally functions without intervention by the user, delivering preprogrammed intermittent stimulation. The system allows additional stimulation when required (during an "aura" or at seizure onset) to be administered by the user, a caregiver or companion, using a magnet to trigger the device (magnet stimulation mode).

Previous studies show that the effect of stimulation persists after the actual stimulation has been delivered. Researchers at Ghent University Hospital (Ghent, Belgium) have evaluated the clinical efficacy of VNS in both modes.

During a mean follow-up period of 35 months, 46% of users responded with a reduction in seizure frequency of more than 50%. 29% stopped having convulsive seizures.

Seizures could be consistently or occasionally interrupted in 2/3 of users who could self-administer or receive additional magnet stimulation.
