International Exchange

In December 2000, the Epilepsy Foundation (of America) announced invitations to applicants for its newly established Dreifuss International Travel Program. The program is intended to promote the exchange of information and expertise about epilepsy between health care professionals of the United States and other countries. Inquiries are invited from any health care professional dealing with patients with epilepsy, and are not limited to any academic degree category or level.

The Dreifuss International Travel Program offers assistance to non-American individuals travelling to the USA and to professionals in that country travelling to host institutions abroad. The host and visitor are required to design an individual program which emphasizes the sharing of expertise and training in clinical care and research of the epilepsies.

Applicants to the Dreifuss International Travel Program may include, but are not limited to, physicians, nurses, technologists and other allied health professionals, psychologists and behavioural practitioners. At least one party in the exchange must be from the USA. The program is supported by Elan Pharmaceuticals Corporation, Inc.

The Dreifuss International Travel Program was established in honor of the late Fritz E Dreifuss, MB, FRCP, professor of neurology and director of the comprehensive epilepsy program at the University of Virginia. Dr. Driefuss played a major role in the growth of the international epilepsy movement and held all major leadership offices in the International League Against Epilepsy.

He was also a moving force behind the International Classification of Seizures and Epilepsy, which has fostered research and communication internationally.
