Housing for Seniors

Financial assistance to meet housing needs is available for low-income seniors. Seniors' housing programs are for people who are able to live on their own. They are not designed for people who live in long term care facilities. Funding comes from the federal government through the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

    Rent Supplement Program
Landlords may sign an agreement with the government to rent their property at rates that meet the senior tenants' budget. The government then pays the landlord the difference. Seniors may apply to the local housing authority or the Ontario Government's Housing Office.
        More Information

Contact the CMHC office in your area, listed in the Government section (blue pages) of your phone book,
or call the Canadian Housing Information Centre at 800-668-2642.

      Non-Profit Housing Programs
Housing corporations have been formed all over the province by non-profit organizations and municipalities. Seniors should contact their local agencies to apply for low rent housing. Rent is based on previous year's income.
