Epilepsy & Recreation Issues
Physical activity promotes happiness, satisfaction, self expression and social interaction. It is a key component in maintaining healthy minds and bodies. A seizure disorder does not interfere with the ability to enjoy a wide range of recreational activities. In fact, research has shown that people have fewer seizures if they lead an active life.
- In all recreational activities, exercise reasonable caution and common sense.
- Always follow your doctor's suggestions.
- Wear appropriate protective clothing.
- Maintain your medication regimen.
- Pace yourself appropriately.
- Consider the risks when participating in competitive or aggressive team sports.
- Consider disclosing your seizure disorder to other participants and coaches.
- Don't participate if you fell unwell.
- A few activities are not advised for persons with epilepsy, including:
- high tower and hang gliding
- scuba diving
- boxing
- motor vehicle sports
These guidelines will help to ensure that recreational activities are safe and enjoyable for those whose seizures are not well controlled.
