Ciprofloxacin & Seizures
Responing to the anthrax scare in the USA and the widespread use of ciprofloxacin (CiproŽ) in that country, the Epilepsy Foundation [of America] warned in December 2001 that this antibiotic and its relatives, fluoroquinolone antibiotics, may cause seizures, both
- in people living with epilepsy, and
- in persons who do not have epilepsy but are at risk of seizures, including persons with a family history of seizures or previous insults to the central nervous system (head trauma, stroke, tumour, infection).
The Foundation further advised that the risk of seizures is increased with high levels of caffeine, especially when already stressed by infection and fever.
Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA, AspirinŽ) may have the same effect.
Antibiotics should never be taken for any illness without the specific recommendation of your physician.
