Epilepsy Monitoring System (S1001 CAN)
Based on detection of bedtime movement with a wired connection to a remote alarm.
This compact system includes a sensitive motion sensor for use in bed under the mattress on a foam pad support to detect epileptic seizures accompanied by movement spasms.
The controller is normally located near the bed and is adjustable to provide a suitable time delay to minimise false alarms for short duration movements.
There is also a sensitivity adjustment to allow for variations in mattress thickness and degrees of movement.
A rechargeable battery is installed in the controller as a standby power supply in the event of mains failure. This is maintained in a charged condition during normal use with the power supply transformer.
The alarm condition initiates a power output to a wired circuit connected to a remote alarm box. A 10 metre cable is provided, but longer lengths are available, if required, or additional extensions can be used.
If preferred the alarm box can remain in the same room as the monitor and the alarm signal can be picked up by a baby monitor and relayed to its portable receiver .
These monitoring systems have been designed to assist carers and to increase the possibility of being aware of bedtime seizures accompanied by movement. Infallibility cannot be guaranteed, because there are many factors determining the possibility of detecting variable seizure patterns and other conditions.
While a medical treatment is being assessed for reducing epileptic seizures, this kind of monitoring can be a very useful method of determining its effectiveness.
Details are available on request for connection to an institutional centralised alarm circuit or other alarm circuits.
Combination with other sensors is possible in order to detect other types of symptoms of an epileptic seizure in bed. e.g. dribbling, vomiting, urination, excessive perspiration or cessation of breathing.
