Advocacy
Ontario INFOlineINFOline is a service for vulnerable persons with disabilities and vulnerable seniors in Ontario provided by the Ministry of Citizenship, Culture and Recreation of the Province of Ontario.
The word "vulnerable" is used to refer to adults who may rely on others — family, friends and caregivers — to speak for them or to act on their behalf. They may rely on others because their disability, illness, age or inability to communicate makes it difficult for them to speak for themselves or to act on their choices.
Vulnerable persons with disabilities and vulnerable seniors depend on the goodwill and integrity of those around them. Many have suportive and caring families; others may become isolated, suffer from neglect and, in the worst cases, be exploited or abused. INFOline provides free, confidential, one-stop information and referrals to vulnerable persons with disabilities, vulnerable seniors, their caregivers, family, friends and community professionals across Ontario. INFOline personnel are able to provide information and referral services in English, French and other languages.
INFOline provides referrals for:
- Eligibility for public and private income programs
- Funding programs which may cover the cost of medications, assistive devices, and other expenses
- Avenues of appeal when benefits have been denied to a vulnerable adult or family member
- Circumstances that may require legal advice, and where and how to get it
- Competency assessment, guardianship, powers of attorney and related issues
- Social and community services available to vulnerable adults and their caregivers
- Long-term care, mental health, disability-related and abuse-related services

Legal Service for SeniorsThe Advocacy Centre for the Elderly (ACE) is a community-based legal clinic in Toronto for senior citizens with low income. ACE is managed by a volunteer board of directors where the majority of these members just happen to be seniors. ACE is the first legal clinic in Canada to specialize in the legal challenges that seniors may face. ACE is funded through the Ontario Legal Aid Plan.
ACE provides direct legal services and public education, and pursues law reform. Direct legal services deal with a wide variety of areas including pension problems, advocacy for seniors in long term care institutions and care homes, elder abuse, seniors pensions, and issues concerning mental incapacity.
What can ACE Do for You?
ACE may represent you in any legal issues which relate strictly to seniors. ACE helps seniors with such things as pensions, long-term care, retirement homes, age discrimination, and elder abuse. These are some primary past examples of the many legal cases that ACE has dealt with over the many years:
- if your son or daughter believes that you are mentally incompetent, but you disagree.
- if you are unhappy with your care in a nursing home or other institution.
- if a relative or a friend is handling your finances and using your funds for their own benefits.
- if you are living with a person who is mistreating you physical or verbally
- if you are concerned about the possibility of your mental abilities deteriorating and you want to know how to prepare for the future.
This service is open to anybody who is 60 or more years of age, lives in Toronto, and meets ACE's financial eligibility guidelines. There is no charge for this service. ACE will provide a free service to low income seniors. There may be some cases where a client may be asked to contribute to the cost of a court action, but they will not be asked to cover the whole cost. Everything and anything that is discussed with the client and the lawyer remains confidential.
