AMA Stroke Study
The American Medical Association reports that studies in various centres in Canada, Israel, Australia and Italy show that seizures are more common following haemorrhagic than ishaemic strokes.
Researchers followed 1,897 stroke patients (with no history of epilepsy and who had been diagnosed with computed tomography) for an average of 9 months. Seizure occurance was 10.6% of those who had haemorrhagic strokes, and 8.6% in those who had ischaemic strokes.
Only 2.5% (1 in 40) of patients developed epilepsy.
