to assess fetal risk from AEDs in women with epilepsy who are pregnantto determine what therapies and seizures are associated with increased risk
The AED (Antiepileptic Drug) Pregnancy Registry is the first North American Registry for pregnant women who are taking any AED - old or new, monotherapy or polytherapy - to prevent seizures. The findings will be analyzed to assess the fetal risk from all AEDs in pregnancy.

Any pregnant women is urged to call their toll-free number. All information will be kept confidential. If a doctor calls first, the Registry will be explained and s/he will be asked to provide the women with this number for her to call.

Each participant will be provided with educational materials concerning pre-conception planning and perinatal care, with emphasis on women with epilepsy and unique needs.

After a brief initial interview, a consent form will be sent. When it has been returned, there are 3 more contacts: a) an initial interview about the AED treatment; b) during the 7th month of pregnancy; and c) a month or 2 after the expected date of delivery. The first interview lasts up to 30 minutes; the 2 subsequent interviews are shorter. Enrolled women will be asked to provide through their doctors information about the health status of their infants.

The AED Pregnancy Registry is sponsored by Abbott Laboratories, Glaxo-Wellcome, Inc., Hoechst-Marion-Roussel, Novartis, Ortho-McNeil, and Parke-Davis.
